A wile back, while reading one of my daily web comics, I saw the author/artist was having issue with their desk. Mostly it was that they couldn't get comfy and do their work. they also had a couple of really cool links in their rant to images of all kinds of drawing boards and drafting table. One of them was to an online catalog of all sorts of work stations and drafting tables. After I looked through a few of the catagories there I agreed with the writer/artist of the comic that this is the bets of the offerings. I also came to the same conclusion that the near $1000(USD) (+/- a bit for adding options or not) was a bit steep in price... and then there's the shipping, a whopping $300 (USD) to have it delivered to an address inside the continental US.
Now here is where my situation is different than that of the web comic artist. I have the ability, the tools, and most importantly all the materials that are required to build one of these work stations. Well, actually I'm gong to build two of them, one for my place and one to use here at my mothers house and the only reason I have to build one for my mothers place is that I will be taking parts away form the desk I'm currently sitting at to build the new graphics workstation.
I'll put up a followup post when I have the workstations done, and yes I will include a picture of them side by side =) (much as my mother will likely yell at me for taking over her living room to do it)

Time is not on my side... (Oo)
I think everyone I've ever met has the same thing to say about the passage of time... I spend most of mine leaping in fits and starts from one task to the next. Occasionally I have a spare moment to look for 'cool' that might be out there on the net and pause a second or two to enjoy it. Lately its been looking for how-to tutorials on doing things in both blender and Photoshop, the sheer number of them out there is staggering!
And really, a good number of them are well..... terrible. No point in giving examples, I don't' want to show people crap. now the good ones... lets have a look at some of those shall we =)
I found this blog post purely by accident. It's a list of 25 tutorials to teach some pretty cool things. However, don't' take my word for it go check em out see what you think.
I'll do what I can to show some of the things I've been working on lately, though that would mean having some of that spare time stuff and I just don't seem to get any these days..... now if only I could convince the construction company out the back of my place to do stuff somewhere else with those god-awful powered hammers I would have a bit more sanity and a lot less headache in my life! =O

Admitting to a digitial profesion...
You know when you start buying certain things in a virtual world that you've not only admitted not only that your deeply involved in that world... you have further committed yourself to be known as a certain 'caste' of person in that environment.
Here we see that I have finally admitted to being a builder... complete with my own virtual drafting table... and yes, I do have one in real life as well. =)

Imagining the beginning.....
Well... how time does fly when progress is made.....
Got myself another super sized monitor to put ton the monster of a workstation I blabbed about a while ago... now its all set up around my drawing table ready for me to start rockin' the 3D!

39 and still counting...
... and another day goes past and I still feel no different than I did "when I was 38". I'm really starting to wonder if these annual birthday/holiday/celebration things really are just something devised by the card and gift wrap companies as a machination to promote sales....
On another note, after this moving thing at the start of the month, I now have all my stuff I use unpacked and arranged in an easily accessible fashion. my books are all around where my computer is (strange I know, two competing technologies side by side). I only have two small corners of things to sort out and get placed as I want.
Hmmmmm.... the day is passing and I still have more chores to finish with before the day ends.....

17 days and the future can be now....
17 days has just freight trained right past me!
I've got my monster comp up and running again, almost have my art area (drawing table and supplies storage) all set up; and I got a hold of some more tutorials for 3D model construction and publishing. so it looks like I've got this creative express started up, and ready to get in gear and start doing things.
What have I got instore for all of this? well I've got..... heheheh (^_^)
Have to wait and see, what I will tell is, in all the fun of moving, I rounded up all of my ideas and thoughts for things to make into one binder... and wow! its bursting at the seams jsut about with all the stuff in it. Also found the two big binders of my old story info and the third writing world binder. yeah.. plenty of stuff to work from... so you'll just have to wait and see, either here or in Second life where I'm going to upload and sell most of my stuff.
And now... I think its lunch time.

Refreshing start...
What a month... got myself a new place, all to myself. Means I no longer have to depend on anyone else for my living space. I love it! =D
I am sooooo done with settling for a place that requires a room mate to be affordable.
As for the art side of my life... not really had much time to work on anything of note, still getting all my comps set up. Still need to unpack some things that are in the way of the big monster. Soon as that's done I'll be back on the learning curve again.
Anyway.. gota run out for some food stuffs..

Playing... nothing much else.....
Nothing much new to report... just playing about in some of my programs learning the new features. Such as taking my blog profile dragon pic and doing a bit of resizing and recoloring......
Aside from that, been doing a bit of model building in Second Life. Might have an opportunity to build content for a combat system within SL.

Tools and no inspiration....
I've been working on learning some new tools lately.. mostly software... the first is this:
http://blog.machinimatrix.org/3d-creation/jass-2-1/
Its Called JASS (Just Another Sculptie Studio) .... it's essentially a tweaked up distribution of Blender. The additions are the latest Python scripting environment and a set of python scripts for Blender (named Primstar) for working that black magic of making sculpt maps.
They also have some very well done tutorials stepping through the basics of making an object and creating the mapped textures for it. Best part, they only give the viewer the specific details needed to do the basic learning task done.
From the start they have given with the basic tutorial videos I've been able to make a few deductions and go beyond their basic texture generation and managed to figure out shadow mapped textures that have lighting and shadows on them... last thing I have to figure out is how to apply a texture directly to the model so that it can be baked into a finished texture, shadows highlights and all......
Then comes the hard part.... with this awesome new tool..... what do I make? Inspiration has been scarce lately... so I duno.... =/

Whats in a name
A name.
What is it?
A name, to me, is a verbal way of not just identifying a person, it distinguishes them from everyone else in a unique way.
Hagdrisil
Its a name I have had for over 20 years now, hard to believe that I still have it and use it. Way back in 1989 while I was at college (yes I am that old) some dice, pencils and paper rollplaying buddies were learning a bunch about Norse mythology. In one of our conversations I was relaying some thing about the Yggrdasil, the world tree.I obviously got the name wrong and said hagdrisil. one of my friends didn't think that was right, and we looked it up. After correcting what I had written out I remarked that hagdrisil would make a cool nickname. No sooner had I said it than one of my friends called me Hag, and the name stuck.
A day later I made a character to play set in a very Norse themed high fantasy world, an Elven Baronial prince named Hagdrisil Silvermane. Yeah, it was an attempt to get away from the name.
It didn't work, now 20 years later, here I sit with a name that has not only grown on me its grown into its full. Within the virtual world I used the name, though I couldn't have Silvermane I got sort of close with Shilova. There in that world, I wander about in any of 90 or so dragon themed avatars.
I am Hagdrisil, Hag if you want to shorten it. Any other name...... isn't me.
